How to compress a PDF for IRS or portal upload limits

Shrink scan-heavy PDFs that e-file portals and government uploads reject for size. Compress in the browser, proofread, retry the upload.

What people are asking

Tax pros and admins hitting portal megabyte caps; Facebook groups compressing bank statements for immigration portals.

The return is correct; the portal just hates 45MB of scanned K-1s. Compress, then upload.

What Compress PDF actually does

  • Recompress page images with presets aimed at email/portal caps.
  • Batch ZIP for multiple returns or statements.

What it does not do

  • Change IRS business rules (page size, PDF version)—only file weight from image recompression.

Steps

  1. Open Compress PDF.
  2. Use a stronger preset if the portal still rejects.
  3. Proofread critical pages; upload again.
  4. If size is fine but page count is wrong, fix with Split/Extract—not more compression.
